Locate Cylinder Leakage

Click thumbnail for hi-resolution image. ROSEVILLE, MI: Typical compression gauges offer a decent idea of how well your engine's cylinders are holding pressure, but that's about it. If you get a questionable reading you won't have any idea if the problem is an intake valve, an exhaust valve, compression rings or a combination of all three. You need more information before you can pursue corrective action, otherwise you're just throwing time and money at what you think might be the problem. That's where the Proform Dual Gauge Leak Down Tester is so valuable. Hand-thread the Leak Down Tester hose into a spark plug hole, attach the gauge assembly to a suitable air source (preferably a tank of compressed air), adjust the tester's pressure regulator until the leakage gauge needle is in the "set" position, then attach the gauge assembly to the hose going to your test cylinder. Ideally the leakage gauge reading will drop only slightly, in which case that cylinder is properly sealed. If cylinder leakage is substantial, you'll find air escaping from your intake (indicating intake valve leakage), from your exhaust (exhaust valve leakage) or from your crankcase ventilation (ring leakage). Built using top quality gauges and brass components, the reasonably priced Proform Dual Gauge Leak Down Tester can save the do-it-yourself performance enthusiast a whole lot of time and trouble when it comes to cylinder troubleshooting.
